Back-to-school fun

With Palm Beach students wrapping up their first week of school, and the rest of South Florida preparing to start Monday morning, a lot of families are looking forward to this weekend.

Kick off the family fun with the Target Free Third Friday at the Miami Children’s Museum from 3 to 9 p.m. on Friday (miamichildrensmuseum.org). Or check out the city of Miami Gardens’ back-to-school-themed Food Truck Invasion and Open Mic Night on Friday, from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m., at Rolling Oaks Park in Miami Gardens. There will be a book bag giveaway, and everyone is encouraged to wear their school colors. For information, call 305-914-9070.

In Fort Lauderdale, plane enthusiasts can try out their flying skills, and meet a pilot at the Museum of Discovery and Science on Friday during its celebration of National Aviation Day with JetBlue. Activities will include real life stories and narratives from JetBlue crew members in the museum’s science theater (starting at 11 a.m.) and exploration of the museum’s “To Fly” exhibit (mods.org).

Because it is the third Friday of the month, families can take in “The Lorax” 3D movie at 8 p.m. on the Great Lawn in Pompano Beach (954-786-4111), or head to Hollywood’s Young Circle for a bounce house, face painting and family entertainment starting at 5 p.m., with “The Peanuts Movie” (G) showing on the lawn at 8 p.m. (hollywoodfl.org).

Academic-themed fun and games continue Saturday with the Back to School Bash from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Miami Children’s Museum. The event features pencil-case making, a backpack relay race and a show by the MCM Players (miamichildrensmuseum.org).

Washington Park is having its Back to School Bash from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at 5199 Pembroke Road in Hollywood. Families can celebrate healthy eating and fitness at Dania Beach PATCH Urban Farm and Market’s Back to School event Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The event features farm tours, arts and crafts, free samples, a uniform giveaway, games on the green, healthy cooking demonstrations, PATCH BBQ, and more (thepatchgarden.com).

Put school aside and focus on artistic challenges with the Saturday’s Family Studio at the Norton Museum of Art in West Palm Beach (norton.org/familystudio). The challenge runs from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and requires a $1 materials fee. RSVP at 561-832-5196, ext. 1138.

Enjoy the great outdoors on Sunday with Fun Days at The Little Farm in Miami. Pony rides, a petting farm, a tour of farm and the butterfly garden are offered 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. weekends and are included in the $10 per person fee. RSVP at 305-258-3186 (thelittlefarm.us).

In Broward, hop aboard the Model Steam Train. Rides are offered from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. this weekend at Tradewinds Park in Coconut Creek. At only $1.50 per ride (cash only, plus a park entrance fee of $1.50 per person), this is a great way to entertain kids of all ages. 954-357-8720

Families can wind down the weekend in Palm Beach County with a free Sunday concert on the Waterfront from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Meyer Amphitheatre in West Palm Beach (wpb.org/sunday-on-the-waterfront). Or beat the heat with a science demonstration at the Children’s Science Explorium at Sugar Sand Park in Boca Raton. The 3:30 p.m. demonstration for ages 7 and older is free (SugarSandPark.org).
