Ex-wife of slain FSU professor denies role in killing

The ex-wife of a slain Florida State University law professor and her family are denying any involvement in his murder, saying the recent speculation is “categorically false.”

Attorneys for Wendi Adelson and her family issued a statement Wednesday in response to recent media coverage after investigators said they think Daniel Markel was killed in a murder-for-hire plot.

“We are issuing this statement because the media continues to run stories suggesting — without any support or evidence — that the Adelsons were somehow involved in Dan’s murder,” the statement read. “To be clear, none of the Adelsons — Wendi, her brother Charlie, or their parents Donna and Harvey — had anything to do with Dan’s murder.”

Police say Sigfredo Garcia and Luis Rivera, a South Florida Latin King gang leader, traveled from South Florida to Tallahassee to kill Markel in July 2014. Both men are awaiting trial on murder charges and prosecutors have said they are seeking the death penalty.

For two years, the family has been subjected to a rigorous investigation during which authorities reviewed phone records, financial records, emails, text messages and Internet searches, the statement said.

“We understand why the government has put the Adelson family through this type of severe scrutiny. But nothing has turned up that supports this fanciful fiction that the Adelsons were involved,” the statement said. “There is a reason that the police have not arrested any of the Adelsons — they weren’t involved in Dan’s death.”

Markel died after being shot in the head as he pulled into his garage on the morning of July 18, 2014. Police traced the murder back to Garcia and Rivera through the rental car they drove to Tallahassee. Investigators also said and informant claimed to have met both men and arranged to rent a motel room in Tallahassee for them the night before the murder.

“Dan’s death was a tragedy, and the loss is profound. Although Wendi and Dan were divorced, he was the father of their two children, who must now grow up without their dad,” the statement said. “We share in the hope that those responsible will be brought to justice.”
