Fort Lauderdale police detective killed when his Jeep is rear-ended in Coral Springs

An extended family of South Florida police and firefighters was in mourning Sunday following a car crash that claimed the life of 30-year-old Fort Lauderdale Police Detective Christopher Sheehan.

“He was just a great kid,” said Dennis Sheehan, a retired Fort Lauderdale Fire-Rescue Division Chief and Christopher Sheehan’s uncle. “Our family is just devastated.”

Sheehan was at the wheel of a 1995 Jeep Wrangler and heading north on State Road 7 at Wiles Road when his vehicle was rear-ended by a 2010 Dodge Challenger driven by Joselyn Lopez, 29, of Margate, according to Coral Springs police.

Sheehan was declared dead at the scene of 2:30 a.m. Saturday crash.

Funeral arrangements are pending.

Coral Springs Police are asking witnesses or anyone with information about the crash to call Officer Derek Fernandes of the traffic unit at 954-346-1754.
