Girl dumped on side of the road by carjacker ‘was determined to get back to her parents’

Stayana Holder was finishing up an evening jog when she saw a little girl running toward her.

“I automatically assumed her parents were right behind her,” Holder, 25, said.

But when she got closer and took off her earbuds, she realized the girl was all alone and had been crying.

Police continue to search for the man who stole a black Kia SUV with the girl in the back seat at 7:17 p.m. Thursday at Sunoco, 7801 W. Sample Road in Coral Springs. The 2012 Sedona has Florida tag CQQ V13.

Surveillance footage released Friday shows the driver, Delroy Booth, running after the

SUV as his 6-year-old stepdaughter was taken away.

When the carjacker noticed the girl was in the car, he dropped her off on the side of the road about two miles away from the gas station.

That’s when she started running.

“I asked her where her parents are and she explained what happened. She was running toward the gas station,” said Holder, who found the girl on Wiles Road near Creekside Drive. “She was really scared, but at the same time she was determined to get back to her parents.”

Holder calmed the girl down and stayed with her until police arrived to take her back to her stepfather.

“The child, still understandably upset from the incident, would not leave Holder despite officers on scene,” said Capt. Brad McKeone.

Holder volunteered to accompany the girl back to the gas station in a police car, she said.

“I’m glad that she’s safe. That was my main goal,” Holder said. “If I didn’t run into her, something else could have happened to her. [Wiles Road] is a very busy street, especially after 5 p.m.”

Surveillance footage showed the carjacker wore a red hat and a dark-colored shirt. He approached the car shortly after Booth got out and looked around before jumping into the driver’s seat and taking off.

“No matter how short the task, you should always bring your child inside with you. You just never know what criminals are lurking nearby looking for a crime of opportunity,” the Coral Springs police posted on Facebook.

Authorities ask that anyone with information regarding this incident contact Detective Brian Koenig at 954-346-1229 or report an anonymous tip through Broward Crime Stoppers at 954-493-8477.
