Local golf tournament to help struggling Alzheimer’s center

While former Miami Dolphins football players Keith Sims and Troy Drayton were known for their excellence on the field during their respective heydays, both of the previous NFLers are now doing something that they feel may be even more notable than any of their gridiron accomplishments.

Sims has sponsored the Celebrity Golf Invitational for the past several years, but recently asked Drayton to help generate even more participation to raise awareness and funds for the Alzheimer’s Family Center in Margate. The eighth annual tournament, which is set to tee off at the Heron Bay Golf Club in Coral Springs on Saturday, Apr. 25 at 9:30 a.m., will feature several other former NFL players and celebrities in the field.

“It’s such a reward to know that my involvement and the participation of my former teammates can help raise money for such a worthy cause,” said Sims, who played on the Dolphins’ offensive line from 1990 to 1997. “Alzheimer’s puts tremendous pressure on a family; knowing that the money we have raised over the years goes to helping families right in Broward is something that has driven me through the years to keep raising even more and more money.”

This year Drayton has teamed up with Sims and is “driving” toward the same goal once again.

“It means a lot to me to have money go to the Alzheimer’s Foundation and I’m glad I can lend my ‘celebrity’ to help raise funds and awareness,” said Drayton, whose Dolphins’ stint was from 1996 to 1999. “I’m looking forward to raising a lot of money with the help of my former teammates and the members of the [National Football League Player’s Association] South Florida Chapter members.”

At the event, participants will tee off with celebrities they had been paired with at the V.I.P. pairings party. For Sims, it will be a walk down memory lane.

“Selfishly, it gives me a great chance to re-connect with former teammates, and for anyone who has played at my event, they’ll say that the funniest times are when you get the former teammates together who are joking with one another,” Sims added. “I love it when everyone has a good time and that makes it all worthwhile.”

Although the event is a complete golf outing with 18 holes, food and prizes, Sims hopes that the participants can go home with more to talk about that just their own greens accomplishments and that having played with former NFL players while donating toward a worthy cause is something they all can remember years from now.

“It definitely adds value to everyone who attends and it gives the golfers a chance to ask questions to the celebrities that they normally would never get an opportunity to do; that one-on-one time with a former player is priceless,” Sims said.

According to Joyce Karney, who is the executive director of the Alzheimer’s Family Center in Margate, the funds raised from this event have become indispensable for the Center’s functionality.

“These funds throughout the years have become vital for our Center, as the monies raised through the golf tournament assist in underwriting our essential programs and services to the seniors in our community; we provide more than just Alzheimer’s in-home support services as we’re here to help all seniors,” Karney said. “More and more families are in need of our services, and having the Keith Sims and Troy Drayton Invitational is a great way to raise necessary monies within an event that’s a lot of fun.”
