Median age of Parkland residents higher than in 2000

The median age of residents in Parkland increased between 2000 and 2010, according to figures released last week by the Census Bureau.

In 2010, the median age in Parkland was 40, compared with 35.5 a decade earlier. Statewide, the median age was 40.7, two years older than the 2000 median age of 38.7.

The population of Parkland grew from 13,835 in 2000 to 23,962 in 2010.

• The percentage of children 5 and under dropped from 8.4 percent in 2000 to 5.3 percent in 2010;

• The percentage of residents 85 and over grew from 0.3 percent in 2000 to 1.5 percent in 2010;

• There were more women than men in 2010, a slight shift from 10 years earlier. In 2000, Parkland was 50 percent female and 50 percent male. In 2010, it was 51 percent female and 49 percent male.
