Mental evaluation ordered for South Florida ICE chief in child porn case

A mental examination has been ordered for a top South Florida immigration official charged in a child pornography case.

A federal judge issued the order Monday for 50-year-old Anthony Mangione, chief of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement in Miami. He has been on administrative leave from ICE since spring.

The order says Mangione should be examined to determine if he’s at risk of harming himself if released on bail. Mangione has pleaded not guilty and is currently being held without bail.

Mangione is charged with transportation, receipt and possession of child pornography. If convicted, he could get up to 20 years in prison.

Prosecutors say child pornography images were found on Mangione’s home computer during a search in April.
