Miramar man battered in own home by man with drugs, cops say

A 37-year-old Fort Lauderdale man is facing burglary, drug possession and battery charges after police said he assaulted a man he followed from a bus stop.

Jonathan J. Whetsel was arrested about 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at the home of Belisario Plata in the 6200 block of Southwest 25th Street, police said.

Plata, 76, told police Whetsel climbed a fence into his backyard and attempted to break into the house. When Plata tried to get the man to leave, Whetsel punched him and hit him with a piece of wood, he told police.

Men charged with assaulting 'pirate' neighbor

Police said Whetsel had a toolbox that contained cocaine, marijuana and other drugs, along with drug paraphenalia. He faces 13 separate charges, including battery on a person over 65. He is being held in the Broward County jail on $40,500 bond. Miramar Fire Rescue treated Plata for minor injuries.
