Mitzvah madness connects congregants to community

Mitzvahs were performed in abundance and unity on a recent Sunday morning at Temple Beth Orr in Coral Springs.

TBO hosted Mitzvah Day 2017, known as “Mitzvah Madness,” that drew approximately 200 people of different age groups, including children from the congregation’s preschool and religious school to some of the older congregants.

Melissa Kenny, the Mitzvah Day chair, said the event was very successful.

“Coming together as a congregation to work and help those in the community who are either struggling or less fortunate is a great feeling.”

Among the many volunteer projects that event participants took part in included: making sandwiches that went to homeless shelters; challah baking; a car wash where the money raised benefits Camp Jenny; collecting socks and underwear for children and teens that are cared for by Jewish Adoption and Family Care Options; collecting all kinds of toiletries for the Broward Outreach Center and the Jewish Family Services Domestic Abuse Program; and working with the Orchard Supply Hardware team to give the north side of the congregation a little facelift.

“There was a feeling of camaraderie, there was a feeling of purpose and there was a feeling of connection not only to each other but to our community as we worked to help them,” Kenny said.

Kenny noted, “I hope that they [participants] take away that it doesn’t matter how big or small you are or how old you are, you can help make a difference and that a little bit of kindness and caring go a long way.”

Another one of the projects that participants took part in that day was sorting plastic caps that were collected for Caps of Love, an organization that raises money to provide wheelchairs for disabled individuals under the age of 21 in the United States by recycling plastic caps and lids.
