Nussbaum to be honored as ‘Mensch of the Year’

Nat Nussbaum will be honored April 11 at 7 p.m. as “Mensch of the Year” by Congregation Kol Tikvah Men’s Club in Parkland with a karaoke party at the synagogue.

“Nat is the symbol of what the men’s club is all about. He has been involved in all facets of doing good deeds with his dedication to the congregation and the men’s club. Nat is very much deserving of the ‘Mensch of the Year Award,'” said Jay Siegel, president of Congregation Kol Tikvah Men’s Club.

Mensch translated in English as “a good and honorable person” is the Yiddish word that many at the men’s club feel that best describes the essence of Nussbaum’s essence.

In Nussbaum’s honor, the men’s club will celebrate by singing, or in the case of some of the men, attempting to sing some of Nussbaum’s favorite songs at the party.

“The joy of celebrating with Nat is for all of us to sing for him. Not everyone likes long, formal speeches, but there is much fun to be social with everyone participating by singing along, karaoke style,” said Siegel.

“I take such pride and joy in all the activities I am involved in at Kol Tikvah when my wife and I moved to South Florida from New York in 1988,” said Nussbaum.

Among the many activities Nussbaum does at Congregation Kol Tikvah is being chair of the Mitzvah Day program on April 12, being a member of the caring committee of the temple and, outside of the synagogue, being a volunteer at the Daniel Cantor Senior Center.

“All the activities I do are important to the community. With the caring committee, I am one of many volunteers who go to the homes of people who are either sick or lost a member of a family. I also drive people to worship services that would not be able to come on their own,” said Nussbaum.

Married for 18 years to his second wife Nancy, the Nussbaums have five sons.

Nussbaum and Siegel are also proud that Congregation Kol Tikvah with 120 members has one of the largest men’s clubs in the country, according to Siegel.

“Although most congregations have traditionally had more members from Sisterhoods, we are proud that the men’s club has a vital role at Congregation Kol Tikvah,” said Nussbaum, who is the vice president of the club.

“The men’s club is also not just for retirees. Half of our 120 members are under 45, so we have a mixture of young and older people working together for fun, social action programs and worship services,” said Siegel.

The men’s club offers a wide variety of programs for temple members, such as fishing trips, men’s night out social activities, pot luck Shabbat meals, softball teams, speaker sessions and worship services.

Tickets are $36 for dinner, drinks (non-alcoholic) and dessert at Congregation Kol Tikvah, 6750 N. University Dr. in Parkland. To reserve, call 954-346-7878 or email almunk@bellsouth.net
