Parkland teen on mission to save wildlife

Parkland resident Michael Schaja, 15, a high school freshman, convinced the city commission to set up collection pipes at the city’s docks for people to recycle fishing line.

Then he’ll mail them to a recycling plant in Iowa.

A volunteer at the South Florida Wildlife Center, Schaja said he became distraught seeing birds, turtles and pelicans that died from their injuries caused by errant fishing lines.

“We’re definitely going to do it,” said Parkland Mayor Michael Udine.

Schaja plans to get other cities and summer camps to use the pipes.
