Coral Springs’ Sheldon McCullum saved his best for last in winning the 800-meter run during the recent Broward County middle school track and field championship meet at Coral Springs High School.
McCullum, who attends Coral Springs Middle School, needed just over two minutes and 10 seconds to capture the county title in that event. McCullum made his late charge with 150 meters remaining in the race to overtake runner-up Jeremiah Mathieu (Pompano Beach) and third-place finisher Jeremiah Coullame (Lauderdale Lakes).
“I just had to get in front,” said McCullum, 13. “There was a pretty big gap and I knew I had to close it if I wanted to win. I trained a lot. I just increased my stamina and I was able to run faster along the race.”
The Lauderdale Lakes Middle School boys’ team won its fourth consecutive county title, while the girls prevailed for the third straight year.
Locally, two middle-school girls’ squads finished among the top 10 with Westglades placing seventh (23 points) and Sawgrass Springs ninth (18 points). Other area middle-school girls’ teams that placed well were North Broward (16th), Forest Glen (21st) and Lyons Creek (25th).
In the middle-school boys’ division, Ramblewood took seventh place and led local finishers with 28 points. Others making the top 25 were Margate (13th), Coral Springs (14th), Westglades (18th), Forest Glen (21st) and Sawgrass Springs (23rd).
There were many outstanding performances from local athletes.
Sawgrass Springs’ Sierra Thomas finished in third place in the girls’ high jump, while teammate Kendell Williams was fifth. Williams was runner-up in the girls’ long jump, while Westglades’ Mia Englebert wound up in fourth place in the long jump.
Westglades’ Jada Dickens was third in the girls’ discus, while teammate Brooke Bock placed sixth. North Broward’s Jahnay Mars was second in the girls’ shot put.
Forest Glen’s Whitley Hayden was seventh in the girls’ 100-meter dash. Westglades’ Emily Burke was third in the girls 1,600-meter run. In the girls 800-meter run, Forest Glen’s Precious Clark and Sabrina Fortney were among the top finishers.
Westglades’ Ryan Plane was fourth in the boys’ high jump. Margate’s Kervins Choute was fifth in the boys’ discus and Ramblewood’s Tajae Davis was sixth. Jai’Mari Herbert, of Coral Springs Middle School, was seventh in the boys’ shot put.
Margate’s Carlson Joseph took flight with a nearly 20-foot effort (19-06.50) to win won the boys long jump, while Ramblewood’s Andre Mills finished in fifth place.
Ramblewood’s Derek Geffrard took second place in the boys’ 100-meter dash, with Forest Glen’s Esteban Ramirez sixth in the 1,600-meter run. Ramblewood’s Brian Atchinson and Sawgrass Springs’ Xavier Velez placed sixth and seventh respectively in the boys’ 400-meter dash.
Ramblewood’s boys powered ahead to the 4-by-200 relay title, while Lyons Creek girls’ squad finished seventh in that same event.
