Springs boy at top speed in county title run

Coral Springs’ Sheldon McCullum saved his best for last in winning the 800-meter run during the recent Broward County middle school track and field championship meet at Coral Springs High School.

McCullum, who attends Coral Springs Middle School, needed just over two minutes and 10 seconds to capture the county title in that event. McCullum made his late charge with 150 meters remaining in the race to overtake runner-up Jeremiah Mathieu (Pompano Beach) and third-place finisher Jeremiah Coullame (Lauderdale Lakes).

“I just had to get in front,” said McCullum, 13. “There was a pretty big gap and I knew I had to close it if I wanted to win. I trained a lot. I just increased my stamina and I was able to run faster along the race.”

The Lauderdale Lakes Middle School boys’ team won its fourth consecutive county title, while the girls prevailed for the third straight year.
