One of the great things about Monday holidays is not only the long weekend, but the short work week that follows it. The weekend is upon us again, and there are lots of great events for families.

Starry Nights

Families looking for free culture can start their weekends early with Free First Thursday Starry Nights at NSU Art Museum, One East Las Olas Blvd., Fort Lauderdale. Sushi Stroll

Splash Bash

With the heat this week, your best bet is the Superhero Splash Bash at Quiet Waters Park in Deerfield Beach. The event is 6-10 p.m. Friday at 401 S. Powerline Road, Deerfield Beach. Family Fest

Saturday brings the Free Family Fest at the Adrienne Arsht Center. Seating is “first-come, first-admitted” for the Miami Music Project performance, which begins at 1:30 p.m. First-Access Passes are required and can be reserved by phone or online. Family Day

For those who can’t get tickets to the Arsht Center event, another great option is Family Day at Coral Gables Museum. The day includes free admission, kids activities and performances from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday at 285 Aragon Ave., Coral Gables. Call 305-603-8067.

Sock Hop

In Broward, put your dance shoes on at the free ’50s Sock Hop, with music, activities and snacks for ages 6-11. The event starts at 2 p.m. at the West Regional Library, 8601 W. Broward Blvd., Plantation. RSVP at 954-765-1560.


If you’re in Palm Beach County, grades 3 to 5 can make African masks at the Art-e-ology program from 1 to 2:30 p.m. at the Boca Raton Museum of Art, 501 Plaza Real, Boca Raton. For $5, students can create art based on West African masks. RSVP at 561-392-2500, ext. 105, or
