Woman accidentally struck, killed cousin, police say

A woman waiting in the car for her cousin, who was running errands at a bank Wednesday afternoon, accidentally hit the gas and ran her over, killing her, police said.

Rubiela Aviles-Rojas, 61, of Coral Springs, was dragged approximately 30 feet in the parking lot of Chase Bank, 8975 W. Atlantic Blvd., around 4:20 p.m.

The car, driven by her cousin Blanca Rojas-Bedoya, then went over a curb and struck a tree, police said.

Bystanders flipped the 1999 Mitsubishi SUV on its side to free Aviles-Rojas, “who was still under the vehicle with very serious injuries,” police said.

Aviles-Rojas was flown to Broward Health North, where she died at about 5:25 p.m. Rojas-Bedoya was not injured in the incident, police said. No charges have been filed; the investigation continues.

Authorities ask that anyone with information contact Coral Springs police at 954-346-1754.
